Athletic Mouthguards and Dental Trauma

Nov 8 • 1 minute read

Did you know?

Studies have shown that up to 61% of athletes reported experiencing trauma to their teeth and mouth!  Mouthguards were first used by professional boxers but has since become generalized to most contact sports since the early 1900s.  It is a great protective device to protect the teeth from getting bumped and also protects the teeth from being clenched while lifting weight or doing other rigorous activities.

What should you do if your tooth gets knocked?

The best thing to do if a permanent tooth is knocked out is to put it back in the socket.  If putting a tooth back in the socket is too difficult, then it should be put in a small glass of milk or Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution (available at some nurse stations).  The tooth root should NOT be scrubbed clean or excessively rinsed.

Consult your dentist as soon as possible, and especially if:

  1. A tooth is knocked out
  2. A permanent tooth is moved out of place
  3. A tooth is fractured (pink on tip of a tooth may be a sign of nerve exposure)

Dr. Tran Hoang and Dr. Carol Wong offer emergency consultations and/or emergency services 24 hours per day 7 days per week.  Contact them at (925) 681 - 1801 in case of dental emergency.
